Gummy Grins, Drool and All: 5 Signs Your Baby Is Teething

August 13, 2025

Your baby’s first tooth is a big deal, but the lead-up can be a bumpy ride. Teething is a normal part of your child’s development, but it often brings changes in mood, appetite, and even sleep. The good news is that once you know what to look for, you can help keep your little one comfortable until that first tooth makes its grand debut. Continue reading to learn five clear signs that your baby’s toothy grin is about to begin.

1. Increased Drooling

One of the earliest and most obvious signs of teething is excessive drooling. You might notice your baby’s chin and clothes are often wet. During this time, it’s a good idea to keep a soft bib on hand and gently wipe their mouth. This can help prevent skin irritation and rashes, keeping them more comfortable.

2. More Chewing and Gnawing

When teeth are moving under your child’s gums, chewing helps relieve the pressure. Babies may chew on toys, their hands, or anything they can grab. Teething rings, chilled (not frozen) washcloths, or safe teething toys can provide relief without harming their gums. If you’re ever unsure about what’s safe for them to chew on, just ask your child’s dentist.

3. Fussiness or Irritability

Teething can make your baby crankier than usual due to the discomfort of teeth breaking through the gum line. Extra cuddles, gentle gum massages, and keeping a calm environment can help soothe their mood as they go through their big feelings.

4. Changes in Eating or Sleeping Patterns

Some babies may eat less because their gums are sore, while others want to nurse or bottle-feed more for comfort. This general discomfort can also make it more difficult for your baby to sleep, especially at night when it feels the worst. Offering comfort and sticking to routines can help them settle down.

5. Swollen or Tender Gums

If you gently run a clean finger along your baby’s gums, you might feel a firm bump where a tooth is about to come in. The gum may look red or slightly swollen. A cool teething ring or chilled spoon can provide temporary relief.

Teething can be a challenging stage for both babies and parents, but knowing what to look for makes it all easier to navigate. With patience, comfort, and the right tools, your little one will be showing off their first tooth in no time!
