Visiting the dentist’s office can be a scary experience for some children; however, it doesn’t have to be. When using the right techniques at home, parents can help reduce dental anxiety by finding ways to connect with their children. One of the most beneficial ways to minimize fear and instead create excitement is through reading. Find out which books can be used to change the way your child views visiting the dentist.

What Causes Dental Anxiety in Children?

There is no one answer to describe why children experience dental anxiety. Instead, it is often brought on by everything from past dental trauma, a fear of needles, and even a dislike of the sights, sounds, and smells found in a dentist’s office.

But no matter why it develops, it’s important that parents do not dismiss regular dental checkups and cleanings for their child. Doing so will put their son or daughter’s teeth and gums at risk for developing cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and more.

Although it can be challenging trying to convince a child to see the dentist, there are helpful ways to make this twice-yearly visit more enjoyable.

How Can Reading Change the Way My Child Views the Dentist?

In addition to speaking positively about the dentist’s office, watching videos, and even playing with toys that focus on dental role play, reading books about the topic can be beneficial. Some of the most enjoyable ones that dentists recommend include:

  • “Just Going to the Dentist” by Mercer Mayer: As part of the Little Critter series, this book gives children a look at what goes on during a regular dental checkup and teeth cleaning. From X-rays to even filling a cavity, it can help to ease dental anxiety using characters everyone in the family will love.
  • “Tears In My Ears: A Visit to the Dentist” by Renee C. McArdle: This book focuses on Penny, a young girl who is anxious about visiting the dentist. Children will enjoy learning how she overcomes her fears, helping them to want to do the same.
  • “The Tooth Book” by Dr. Seuss: Although the focus may not be solely on dental appointments, children can learn the importance of regular dental visits and why they’re necessary to ensure healthy teeth and gums for life.
  • “My Dentist, My Friend” by P.K. Hallinan: Instead of being afraid, this book will help young ones identify their dentist as a friend – someone who wants to help, not cause hurt, and who will walk by their side on their oral healthcare journey as they grow older.

While these are just a few of the many books about dental care, you will find that by choosing ones with vibrant pictures and fun, thoughtful storylines, your child will become less anxious about their dental visit and more excited about what they can expect.
