Frequently Asked Pediatric Dental Questions – Grayslake, IL

Your Questions about
Our Pediatric Dental Office Answered

Do you have questions about Kids Dentist before you commit to an appointment? We understand completely, which is why we have taken the time to answer some of the most common questions right here. If you have other questions about our services or our dental office, feel free to call us up and ask. We will happily help in whatever way we can!

When Is a Good Time for My Child’s First Dental Visit?

In most cases, we recommend bringing your child in for their first dental appointment around the time they turn one year old or six months after their first tooth has arrived. At this point, we will focus on familiarizing your child with our team, answering any questions you may have, and performing a quick, gentle dental exam. If you have dental concerns before they have reached this age, you’re certainly welcome to give our dental office a call.

Why Should I Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

A pediatric dentist has undergone extensive, rigorous training focused on children’s dental issues. Then, a pediatric dentist must be certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, which our dentists are. As a result, we can offer specialized care that you simply won’t find at a general dental office.

When and Why Is It Good to Use Fluoride?

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel against decay, which is why most dental products and public drinking water contain it. However, it is a good idea to wait to use fluoride products in your child’s daily routine until they are able to spit to prevent their ingesting too much. At the end of our cleaning and checkup appointment we will apply a topical treatment of fluoride to your child’s teeth for extra protection.

My Child Has a Dental Emergency, What Should I Do?

In dental emergencies, your first move should be calling our dental office. We will get them scheduled for an emergency visit, often on the same day, and we will provide guidance for handling the situation until you arrive.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

We recommend that your child see an orthodontist usually by age seven. At this point, they can foresee alignment issues and provide any necessary treatment early on, reducing the intensity and duration of treatment. We work closely with Grayslake Orthodontics to provide the best possible care for your child.

Does My Child Still Need to Have Dental Checkups Every Six Months if They Have Braces?

Absolutely! Braces are great at straightening teeth, but they can also trap plaque and food particles, increasing your child’s risk of cavities. To keep their teeth healthy throughout orthodontic treatment, we strongly recommend continuing to see us on a regular basis for cleanings and checkups. In many situations when keeping the teeth clean is a challenge, a more frequent dental cleaning is recommended. (every 3- 4 months)
