When to Schedule the First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the team at Kids Dentist recommend parents schedule their child’s first dental visit by the time their first tooth erupts or before they reach the age of one. As an individual who likely possesses a busy schedule, we understand your time is precious, and children often dictate how you spend it. This is why when you call our office to schedule an appointment, we will work to identify a time that works best for your schedule.

You are free to download new patient forms, fill them out ahead of time, and bring them to your child’s appointment to make the process more efficient and ensure an on-time schedule.

First Visit Expectations

When bringing your child to our dental office for their first visit, they’ll likely be looking around at the various objects within the treatment room as well as taking in the sights, sounds, and smells. Also, because this visit will not focus as much on an extensive checkup or cleaning, we’ll be focused more on establishing a healthy and positive relationship with you and your child.

Their first visit will consist more of familiarizing them with our team members and answering your questions about how to properly care for these emerging teeth at home.

We will perform a gentle exam just to ensure there are no early problems, and we’ll provide some additional insight into common issues that can occur during this time and what you can do to mitigate them.

How to Prepare a Child for Their First Visit

Knowing how to properly prepare your child for their first dental visit does require taking a proactive approach. Because some children are often scared or unsure about this initial appointment, it’s best if you follow these tips to make this visit as seamless, successful, and as stress-free as possible:

  • Talk about visiting a children’s dentist in Grayslake using positive wording and tones. Your child will pick up on any negative verbiage or sounds used to describe the dentist’s office, so be careful what and how you talk about the dentist.
  • Read kid-friendly books about visiting the dentist to help minimize the potential for anxiety or fear.
  • Show them pictures online of the dentist’s office, so they become familiar with the atmosphere before they arrive.
  • Explain what will happen during the first visit so they’re not surprised when the day comes.
